There were three literary devices shown throughout the novel. One of the literary devices was Symbolism. The second device is imagery and lastly flashbacks were present in the novel.
Cigarettes are a symbolism for depression Holden faces constantly.
In the following quote ," I lit a cigarette and got all dressed and then I packed these two Gladstones...One thing about packing depressed me a little." (Page 67) it illustrates that when he is feeling upset or blue he get's a depressed feeling and the only way to get out of this mood is by smoking.
Allie's physcal description is a symbolism for imagery becaue it let's the reader get a vivid picture of how his brother looked and how he was.
In the following quote," People with red hair are supposed to get mad ver easily, but allie nver did, and he had very red hair. I'll tell you what kind of red hair he had..there was this fence that went all around the course-and he was sitting there, about a hundred and fifty yards behind me, watching me tee off. That's the kind of red hair he had." (Page 50) illustrates the physical appearance of his brother and how Holden would know if his brother is near or not by his really red hair.
Lastly, Holden's flashback of "necking" with Jane is a symbolism that came up in the novel.
In the following quote," I remmber this one afternoon. It was the only time old Jane and I ever got close to necking, even. It was a Saturday and it was raining like a bastard out, and I was over at her house, on the porch-they had this big screened-in porch. We were playing checkers. I used to kid her once in a while becasue she wouldn't take her kings out of the back row. The she really started to cry, and the next thing I knew, I was kissing her all over-anywhere-her eyes, her nose, her forehead, her eyebrows, and all, her ears- her whole face except her mouth and all." (Page 101) shows how Jane must of been someone important to remember because when one brings flashbacks of someone or something, is because it means a lot to the person and has a significant importance that affected them.
